Synthetic CBD Vaping Causes Overdose
Mooresville, North Carolina – A 31 year old employee working at Tobacco & Vapor, a local vape shop in Mooresville, NC has been taken into custody following the overdose of a high school student. The employee has been charged with 9 felony drug charges, all relating to the distribution and sale of a schedule I controlled substance.
The identified substances were synthetic cannabinoids, 5-Fluro ADB and FUB-AMB, both of which are labeled a controlled substance. 5F-ADB is a synthetic cannabinoid/cannabis products sold as a designer drug. FUB-AMB, or AMB-FUBINACA, is an indazole-based synthetic cannabinoid that produces a large physiological response when engaging the bodies cannabinoids receptors. The synthetic cannabinoids were being marketed as “Black Diamond” CBD oil.
Cannabidiol Oil, or CBD oil, is a natural hemp extract containing Cannabinoids, the non-psychoactive compound found in Marijuana plants. CBD is largely being touted as a “wonder drug” for its therapeutic properties. However, 5-Fluro ADB and FUB-AMB are not natural cannabinoids, and are noted as having negative side effects that include:
- Loss of Consciousness
- Sudden Death
The raid and arrest at Tobacco and Vapor turned up nine additional bottles of “Black Diamond” that were hidden all over the store, as well as a large quantity of cash. The shop employee is being held on $75,000 bail.
There is currently no information available about the condition of the high school student who unknowingly vaped these dangerous and illegal substances. Incidents like these highlight the need for responsible cannabis use and sales. The medicinal and therapeutic properties of CBD are well documented, as are the pitfalls of their synthetic counterparts. As more people turn to the benefits of CBD, there needs to be safe access for consumers.
When considering where to purchase CBD products, conduct due diligence on the retailer and the product. Look for third party lab tested products with access to batch specific results. In states where medicinal and recreational Marijuana is legal, look for products with low THC content to avoid any unwanted high or adverse reaction to the psychoactive compound. Dispensaries often carry CBD products extracted from the same plants used for recreational or medicinal purposes and therefore contain larger quantities of THC. CBD oil extracted from hemp will contain <0.03% THC.
